Irish George III Mahogany Tall Case Clock
Circa 1780
The 13 1/2 inch dial signed Pat. Boylan / Dublin with cherub spandrels, seconds dial, date aperture and engraved center, rack- and bell-striking movement, the case with swan's-neck cresting and flowerhead terminals flanking a central carved finial above a convex frieze carved with a grotesque mask and leaf sprays, with fluted hood pillars, the trunk door with shaped top and flanked by fluted quarter columns above a panelled plinth on bracket feet. Height 7 feet 11 inches (241.5 cm).

Patrick Boylan, a Dublin clock maker, is first recorded in 1770, and the firm he established continued to trade for almost sixty years, being last recorded in 1828; see Brian Loomes, Watch Makers and Clock Makers of the World, vol.11, 1976.
