Cuban Mahogany Sacristy Chest of Drawers
18th Century
The molded rectangular top with outset rounded corners above a conforming case fitted with four graduated cockbeaded drawers mounted with brass bail handles, the molded plinth raised on shaped scroll-carved molded feet. Height 45 inches (114.2 cm), width 61 1/2 inches (156.3 cm), depth 33 inches (83.8 cm).
The present chest of drawers, a cómoda de sacristía, was made to hold a priest's vestments that were stored in the sacristy, a room adjacent to the altar where the priest prepared for Mass. Many examples are found throughout the Latin American region. It is a fine example of Cuban Baroque cabinet making, with its massive form and outset rounded corners on boldly projecting foliate-carved feet, each foot carved from a single piece of mahogany and held in place by a wooden peg put through a hole at the base of a vertical post, keeping the foot in place.
