Biedermeier Mahogany Globe-Form Work Table (Globustisch)
Circa 1820, Vienna
The retractable globe top with segmented veneer panels opening to an interior fitted with a pedimented prospect niche with frieze drawer, mirrored sides and perspectival parquetry floor, spring-loaded and sliding forth to a secret panel and six side drawers, above a tray with divided center section and lidded compartments, the whole lifting to a well backed by drawers and hinged cupboard doors, the whole supported on the kneeling figure of Atlas, the tripartite plinth on block feet. Height 49 5/8 inches (126.4 cm), diameter 20 3/4 inches (53 cm).

This work table showcases the expertise of a skilled master craftsman, its finely engineered elements still working seamlessly. The form of a Globustisch was widely used in the Biedermeier period and epitomizes the simplicity and elegance of design found in Biedermeier furniture. A kneeling figure supporting the globe is rare, most tables being raised on three legs; two examples are illustrated, Wilkie, Angus, Biedermeier, Abbeville Press, 1987, figs. 90 & 91, p. 100 and fig. 92, p. 101.
The present table was once in the collection of the Duchess of Kent, née Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark (1906-1968), a member of the British Royal Family. Another work table, still in the Royal Collection, was once thought to have belonged to Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III. Recent evidence shows that it entered the Collection in the 20th century and was purchased by Queen Mary (1867-1953) between 1921 and 1931.
