Russian Porcelain Figure of a Coachman
Gardner Manufactory, Verbilki, circa 1840
Modeled standing with his arms akimbo, wearing a tan coat, fuchsia hat and black boots, on a circular rocaille base, impressed mark and numeral under base. Height 7 7/8 inches (20 cm.).

The present figure is derived from the illustration by K.A. Zelentsov in Magic Lantern [Volshebnyi Fonar'] magazine in 1817. Illustrations of native Russian types in this popular periodical were the source of numerous porcelain figures produced by Russian manufactories in the nineteenth century.
