George III Mahogany Kneehole Desk
In the manner of Thomas Chippendale, circa 1760
The leather-lined rectangular top with sabicu-crossbanded edge above a long drawer and a recess with a shelf at the back and flanked by three graduated cockbeaded drawers and raised on bracket feet; laminated blocks and red wash to underside and back, appearing to retain original gilt-brass handles. Height 32 1/2 inches (82.5 cm), width 38 1/2 inches (97.8 cm), depth 23 1/4 inches (59 cm).
The design of this kneehole desk is derived from that of 'Buroe Tables', dated 1753 and found in Chippendale's The Gentlemen and Cabinet-Maker's Director,' 1754, pl. XLVI.
