Swedish Neoclassical Giltwood and Part-Ebonized Pier Table by Pehr Ljung
Early 19th century
The rectangular marble top above a meandering grape-cluster-carved frieze and raised on Egyptian term figures on ring-turned tapering legs; the front of the frame with printed label and illegible inked inscription: Chez Pre. Ljung à Stockholme. Height 32 3/4 inches (83.3 cm), width 37 3/4 inches (96.6 cm), depth 21 1/4 inches (54 cm).
Pehr Ljung ( 1743-1819) was an ornamental carver, furniture and mirror maker who studied at the Stockholm Academy and under his father, the ornament carver Johan Ljung. He specialized in carved giltwood furniture in the late Gustavian style and was particualrly renowned for his finely carved mirrors and console tables. His work is found at the Royal Palace, Hylinge, Haga and Rosersberg.
