Regency Brass-Mounted and Inlaid Mahogany Chiffonier
Circa 1810, in the manner of George Oakley
The rectangular superstructure with mirrored back flanked by lyre-form supports, above a projecting lower section with a frieze drawer, over a pair of cupboard doors flanked by turned columns, raised on a plinth with outset corners. Height 63 1/4 inches (160.5 cm), width 36 1/2 inches (92.7 cm), depth 13 3/4 inches (35 cm).
The distinctive brass inlay and form of the present lot, with its scrolling supports, are characteristics of the work of George Oakley. The leading London cabinet-maker George Oakley (1773-1840) had extensive premises in Bond Street and the City and undertook commissions for a wide and distinguished circle of patrons, including the Prince Regent, for whom he worked at Carlton House.
