Lot Details

Lot 135
Tiffany Studios Leaded Glass and Bronze Geometric Hanging Shade
Signed TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK. Height of shade 11 1/4 inches, diameter 24 inches.
Provenance:
By repute, the present hanging shade originally hung in the dining room of the stately home of the noted American sculptor William Couper (1853-1942). The home was a large Italianate villa built by Couper in 1905 that he named Poggioridente (laughing knoll). It was located at 105 Upper Mountain Avenue, in Montclair, New Jersey, and is today on the town's historic register.

Estimate: $7,000 - $10,000
Sold for $11,875 (includes buyer's premium)

Additional Notes & Condition Report

the shade appears to be in generally good, sturdy condition; there are hairline and fracture cracks to some of the individual glass segments, approximately 15 such segments, however, there may be more (some of the segments have straw marks that have the appearance of being cracked); there are approximately 15 individual glass segments that have caming/leading that are heightened in gold patina or gold paint; this suggests these glass segments have been either re-soldered or possibly replaced as part of a previous restoration; if these glass segments are replacements, they are very well matched, i.e., there are similar pink streak striations and they have the same yellow and orange coloration as the surrounding glass segments; the gold trace/outlined segments are similarly trace/outlined on the interior side as they are on the exterior side; the pierced metal cap and chains appear to be original, however, they appear to have been gold overpainted and some of the paint is peeling/flaking off; all of the light sockets have old "GE" on/off switches
