London: George Vickers, [1893]. Third edition, inscribed by the author. Publisher's red pictorial cloth gilt. 7 1/8 x 4 1/2 inches; xv, 330 pp.; half-title, press notices. Spine sunned, extremities a bit frayed, endpapers lightly foxed, inscribed on upper cover and front free endpaper and with author's additional ms. editorial comment on p. 315.
Presentation copy from the author to John Hayes Hammond Whiteman. The author has added an entry to the table of contents: The Pig Story, which appears as an Addenda to the third edition. He writes above the chapter title, "This yarn was written as a short story for the Strand Magazine a year after the first edition of this book was published. Being ignominously rejected I included it in the third edition. It is based on the fact that a B. S. A. trooper's body was eaten in a hut while another was looking on too weak from fever to move. The rest is embroidery. [Signed]".
