London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1879. First edition. Publisher's tan pictorial cloth gilt. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches; x, 267 pp.; half-title. Recased preserving much of the original spine, corners bumped, endpapers renewed, evenly toned throughout, library stamp and shelf number in ink on title page.
"Atcherley describes his life in the gold fields of South Africa, though he apparently had little success as a miner. In search of richer fields, he and his companion traveled to the forested region near the Crocodile River where they enjoyed several sporting experiences. Leopard was bagged, as were buffalo, hippopotamus, kudu and black rhinoceros. After crossing the Vaal River, he hunted huge herds of wildebeest and relates a lion hunting adventure" (Czech).
