Late 19th-century half morocco, the spine in six compartments separated by five raised bands, gilt lettered in two, top edge gilt. 9 1/4 x 6 inches; 734, [6] pp.; engraved pictorial title page, frontispiece, plates, in-text illustrations, publisher's advertisements. Spine sunned, extremities rubbed, offsetting from leather to endpapers, professional repair to frontispiece, scattered foxing, bookplate to front pastedown.
First published in parts in 1871, this is the first edition published in book form. Mendelssohn I:925.
