"His account of Matabeleland is one of the best of the earlier modern works on the country" (Mendelssohn). Based on Oates's notebooks from his expedition to South Africa, exploring the region of Victoria Falls. On his return to England, he caught a fever and died, and his brother edited and published his notes in 1881. Not long after publication, a fire at the publisher's destroyed all unsold copies of the first edition, making this book quite rare. A second edition was published in 1889. Czech, Africa, p. 124; Mendelssohn III, p. 565.
