McMillan, 1812. First edition. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, gilt morocco lettering pieces to spine. 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches; xvi, 214, ix, 130 pp.; folding hand-colored plate. Generally a bit rubbed, slightly overopened, one or two spots to frontispiece and first few text leaves, ownership inscriptions to front free endpaper.
Scarce. "Published anonymously, Mendelssohn attributes this work to Thomas Phillips who spent several months in the region in 1825, particularly in the vicinity of the British settlement at Albany. He enjoyed sport after lion, helping bag 'a noble animal, measuring nearly twelve feet from the nose to the tip of his tail.' There are additional moments of encountering leopard, and hunting elephant near the Kounap River" (Czech). Czech, Africa, p. 220; South African Bibliography, vol. III, p. 667.
