BETHELL, ALFRED J. Notes on South African Hunting and Notes on a Ride to the Victoria Falls of the Zambesi...
York: J. Sampson and London: Whittaker and Co., 1887. First edition. Original printed self-wrappers bound into modern quarter leather. 7 x 4 7/8 inches; 94, [8], 20 pp.; double-page map, publisher's advertisements. Some creasing and foxing to wrappers, interior clean.
Scarce; we trace only one copy in the auction record and three institutional copies in WorldCat. "Bethell's narrative is actually derived from several articles appearing in the British sporting periodical The Field, and is quite scarce in the original wraps edition. Bethell and his hunting companion rode to the Victoria Falls of the Zambesi River via rarely traveled roads through Bechaunaland and Matabeleland. While be [sic] describes the battery a hunter should bring, his own hunting adventures are rather sparse consisting of shooting ostrich and giraffe. He also details several of Frederick Selous' exploits" (Czech). Czech, Africa, p. 26.
