BYRON, EDMUND What We Did in South Africa in 1873.
Croydon: S. Clouter for private circulation, 1874. First edition. Publisher's brown cloth gilt. 7 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches; 136 pp. Slight lean, spine sunned with losses to extremities, staining to boards, scattered foxing.
Quite scarce; we trace only one auction record and WorldCat lists only six copies worldwide. "The author landed at Cape Town, spent time visiting various locales, then outspanned to the Umgeni River. He and his companions continued on to Newcastle, then to Leydenburg for a shooting trip. Near the Umtlasi River he bagged impala, kudu, bushbuck and waterbuck. Byron shot an elephant close to the Oliphant River, but lost its trail in the brush. He also wounded a charging rhinoceros, though it, too, escaped. With greater luck (or skill) he did manage to collect a number of buffaloes and hippos. A rare work" (Czech). Czech, Africa, p. 50.
