T. Catesby Jones Collection
Gift to Frances Jones Brooks, his daughter, in 1930

T. Catesby Jones was a Virginia native who practiced admiralty law in New York, where he moved in 1911. He visited the Armory Show in 1913 and frequented galleries in New York. In 1924 he travelled to Paris and began what became a major collection of Fauve, Cubist, and early 20th century European painting. He was advised by artist friends, including Andre Masson and Jacques Lipchitz, and the dealers Jeanne Bucher in Paris and Pierre Matisse and Valentine Dudensing in New York. His bequest after his death in 1946 formed the important European collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond.
