DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828) had a distinguished career in New York politics, serving as a senator, mayor of New York City, and three terms as Governor. He married Maria Franklin in 1796 and the porcelain service was probably ordered shortly thereafter

Lowestoft platter, from set owned by Gov. De Witt Clinton, whose monogram is on it. (De Witt and Maria) On his death, Feb. 1828, the set was bought by Oliver Kane of Albany thence to his second son, Delancey Kane, thence to thee letter's youngest daughter, Sybil Kent Lane, by whom it was given to her cousin, a great-grandson of Oliver Kane, James King Hand.
