Louis Charles Moeller
American, 1855-1930
The Chess Game
Signed Louis Moeller (lr)
Oil on canvas
18 x 24 inches
A label affixed to the reverse of the painting identifies the work as The Chess Game and states that the piece won an award at the National Academy Exhibition in 1895. It appears that Moeller had three works included in the 1895 exhibition but none with this title, nor did he win an award in 1895. He did win the Hallgarten Prize in 1884 for a work titled Puzzled. The aforementioned label also identifies the sitters as Leo Melzino, William H. Shelton, and Louis Betts. It describes the setting as the Salmagundi Club.
