Lot Details

Lot 192
LINCOLN, ABRAHAM Address of the Hon. Abraham Lincoln, in Vindication of the Policy of the Framers of the Constitution and the Principles of the Republican Party, Delivered at Cooper Institute, February 27th, 1860, Issued by the Young Men's Republican Union.
New York: George F. Nesbitt, 1860 [possibly 1907]. With inscription from Cephas Brainerd to title (see note). Sewn in original white wrappers printed in black as issued. 9 3/8 x 5 3/4 inches (23 x 15 cm); 32 pp. The wrappers brittle, lightly stained and nearly detached, small marginal losses at spine and fore-edge also affecting title, small losses to rear wrapper, old dampstain affects title and first few leaves, a few short marginal tears, worthy of preservation.
Scarce pamphlet printing of then candidate Abraham Lincoln's famous speech at the Cooper Institute in New York City delivered on February 27th, 1860. The speech is acknowledged as greatly assisting Lincoln in winning the election and as he also had a portrait photograph taken that same day at Mathew Brady's studio Lincoln later reported "Brady and the Cooper Union speech made me President."
This copy is inscribed on the title "J.E. Hadnett, Esq. with the respects of Cephas Brainerd", a fine association as Brainerd is listed on the title here as member of the Board of Control and provided notes to the speech within. J.E. Hadnett, Esq. is recorded as a New York attorney of the period. For a comparable example see Swann, 27 September 2018, lot 11. That copy contained an inscription on the title from Charles C. Nott, the other Board of Control member listed on the title page who also provided notes to the speech. The current copy, as the Swann example, has page 32 numbered, reported by Monaghan 68 to be the 1907 reprint, but this has been called into question.
