George III Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase Cabinet
In the manner of Gillows, late 18th century
The molded cornice above oval-mullioned glazed doors opening to adjustable shelves, the projecting lower section with drawers and cupboard doors opening to adjustable shelves, on a molded plinth. Height 94 1/2 inches (240 cm), width 140 inches (355.6 cm), depth 22 inches (55.9 cm).
Similar glazing bars are found on a George III mahogany breakfront cabinet with a drawer stamped twice GILLOWS.LANCASTER, Christie's, New York, April 19, 2001, lot 299. The oval drop handle centered by a patera was a popular Gillow model in the late 18th century; see Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 - 1840, Woodbridge, 2008, vol, II, p.335, pl.
