The use of bird imagery is often associated with the Pennsylvania German community and the ideas of rebirth and renewal. Bird trees often corporated bright colors and skilled handcarving. They were also given as gifts to celebrate childbirth or the arrival of spring, as told by Stacy C. Hollander in American Anthem: Masterworks from the American Folk Art Museum.
