Eliza was most likely taught by Sarah McCardell (1791-1863) of Columbia, Pennsylvania. McCardell's students depicted figures with real hair and garden scenes, much like the sampler designs taught by Catharine Buchanan. A closely related example worked in the same year is found in Betty Ring American Samplers and Pictorial Needlework 1650-1850 Volume II p. 428, fig. 475.
