Lot 275
[BIBLE] The Illuminated Bible, containing the Old and new Testaments...
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1846. Period dark-brown pebbled morocco gilt, likely a publisher's binding. 13 x 9 inches (33 x 21.5 cm); Old Testament [viii-including the "Sacred Token" gift leaf]], 844 pp.; The Apocrypha [ii], 128, [6] pp. of Marriages, Births and Deaths; New Testament [iv], 256 pp.; Indices and Concordance 4, 8, 14, 34 pp.; two frontispieces and 15 wood engravings in text by J.A. Adams after J.G. Chapman. Binding recased retaining original covers and spine, some wear. The text somewhat toned, a few short marginal tears or minor dog-earing, binding somewhat worn, in generally a respectable copy of a book that inevitably saw heavy use.
Originally issued in parts (this copy, with the variable toning by section, shows some evidence of having been bound from these), this was among the most elaborate Bibles produced during the nineteenth century, and a landmark in American printing. It is a masterpiece of American wood engraving. "...this Harper publication was a remarkable production for its time and place, and retains its importance in the annals of American book-making. W.J. Linton, noted wood-engraver and author, knew 'no other book like this, so good, so perfect in all it undertakes.' The illustrations are like paintings of history, as are so many of the old European Biblical painting and illustrations" (Hills 1161, quoting Weitenhampf). Hills 1161; Hamilton 198.
