Lot Details

Lot 88A
KIPLING, RUDYARD Typed letter signed to The Rev. Frederick Langbridge, St. John's Rectory, Limerick.
2 pp. on two sheets of Kipling's Bateman's typing stationery, dated 29th June, 1910; 21 lines plus greetings and felicitations, notations and corrections in Kipling's hand. Housed in a chemise and morocco-backed slipcase Usual folds, slight creasing.
An interesting letter pertaining to a dedication (presumably to Kipling) that Langbridge, an author of some note, had proposed; Kipling asks him not to use it. The letter ends with a note, quoted by Martindell, who references this letter on p. 197 of the 1923 edition of the bibliography: "As to 'The Ballad of East and West,' --The Abzai are a tribe on the Indian frontier; the Bonairs are another tribe. They were mentioned to show the scope of Kamal's raids. Fort Buklah and the Tongue of Jagai do not exist in space. There is a Fort Monro, but it is not near the hunting grounds of Kamal."
