New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1931. One of 512 copies, signed by Wyeth. Publishers quarter vellum and cloth, top edge gilt; in the glassine jacket and card case. 11 x 8 1/4 inches (28 x 21 cm); xii, 324 pp., with tipped-in frontispiece, pictorial title, and fourteen other plates, for a total of sixteen plates by Wyeth. A fine copy of the book, the lid of the card case lacking one side-panel, another loose.
Fox's novel, with its story of an orphan among the Kentucky mountaineers who goes on to fight for the Union in the Civil War, was an exceptionally popular children's book when first published in 1903. This edition, illustrated by Wyeth, is quite scarce in the publisher's box.
