First edition, first impression, with first impression points; i.e. with 8 page publisher's list at end, the first state October ads numbered 5R-1083; "dead man's chest" not capitalized on pp. 2 and 7; broken type in "vain" and miscreant" last two lines of p. 40; "a" missing in line 6, p. 63; p. 83 with the page number missing the 8; number 2 overstamped in a different font in the numbering of p. 127; period not present on line 20 of page 178; "worse" instead of "worst" on line 3 of page 197. Publisher's green cloth (various colors without priority), blue-black endpapers; housed in a slipcase and chemise. 7 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches (19 x 12 cm); viii, 292 pp., 8 pp.; four-color frontispiece map with tissue guard. Minor scuff on upper cover, very light wear overall, upper cover fore-corners a bit abraded; rear endpaper separated at hinge, two names in ink (one dated year of publication) on half-title.
Overall, a far better than average example of one of the greatest of pirate stories; the treasure map had been drawn by Stevenson to amuse his young stepson, and the text followed later. McKay 240; Grolier Club, One Hundred Books Famous in Children's Literature, 48
