Lot 178
STEVENSON, ROBERT LOUIS Kidnapped being Memoirs of the Adventures of David Balfour in the Year 1751...
London: Cassell & Company, 1886. First English edition in book form, first issue: the text has the first issue points, corrected in the second issue published later in the same year ("business" which became "pleasure", p. 40 line 11; "nine o'clock" which became "twelve o'clock", p. 64, line 2; and "Long Islands" which became "Long Island", p. 101, lines 9-10). Publisher's blue silk-grained cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, black coated endpapers, housed in a chemise and morocco-backed slipcase (copies of the first edition were variously issued in blue, scarlet, brown and green cloth boards, without priority). 7 1/4 x 5 inches (18.5 x 12.75 cm); viii, 312 pp., with ad for Treasure Island on verso of last text leaf, 16pp. of selections from Cassell's publications (earlier state with "5.G.4.86" at foot of first page); folding map partially in color facing title-page with "Sketch of the Cruise of the Brig Covenant And the probable course of David Balfour's Wanderings."An unusually fresh copy with minimal wear, no foxing within, an exceptionally fresh copy and rare thus.
One of the greatest of Stevenson's adventure novels, published the same year as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this book is usually found "well-loved," and is rare in true collector condition as here.
