The story was first presented as a picture letter to Freda Moore at Christmas 1901 and in December 1902 Potter had it printed in a similar style to the second issue of Peter Rabbit, released the same month. The text and illustrations in the present edition differ considerably from the edition published by Warne in 1903. Quinby 3.
