[CIVIL WAR] SHERIDAN, PHILIP. War date letter signed attaching his brother to his staff as aide-de-camp.
Headquarters 2nd Division, near Blain's [Cross] Roads: 1 January 1864. One page letter in a secretarial hand headed as above and addressed to Brigadier General Lorenzo Thomas at the War Department, Washington, signed "P.H. Sheridan." 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches (24.5 x 19 cm). Remnants of former mounted to verso, usual folds, else fine.
Major General Sheridan here reports that his brother Michael Vincent Sheridan, along with two others, have been attached to his staff as aides-de-camp. M.V. Sheridan served as his brother's aide until the end of the war. This letter was penned in the vicinity of Blaine's Crossroads, TN, in the wake of the Battle of Bean's Station. Together with a five line quotation on a small card in Sheridan's hand, signed, reading: "Beneath the rule of men entirely great/The pen is mightier than the sword."
