[MANUSCRIPT-MINIATURE] Cut miniature from an illuminated manuscript on vellum.
Germany, likely Bamburg or Augsburg, circa 1450-1500, and possibly even slightly earlier. Cutting 4 x 2 3/4 inches (10 x 7 cm), recto with a haloed figure (in greens, reds, yellows and blues) gesturing towards a church (surrounded by the residue of the text), verso with 17 partial lines of text written in German in a fine Textura Quadrata. Some rubbing to the face with small pigment losses, old losses to the verdure beneath his feet.
The long-haired figure is likely that of St. Margaret; the text immediately above in red (with which the miniature would have been associated) reads "Von Sant. Margar" [balance of line lost when cut]. Insufficient text remains for us to identify the work from which this came, though probably not from a Book of Hours based on the density of the script and likely line length; perhaps a Legenda Sanctorum? Apparently with Ken Rendell (old note on frame).
