GRANT, ULYSSES S. Autograph letter signed as President.
Long Branch, N.J.: 5 September 1873. 2 pp., dark brown ink, rectos only of a folded sheet of stationery. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches (22 x 14 cm), 23 lines, plus salutation and felicitation, to "Dear Judge" noted by Grant on the last page to be Judge Edwards Pierrepont. Usual folds.
Grant, vacationing at his summer residence, is writing to the man he would shortly appoint to be the Attorney General of the United States. Pierrepont had directed the unsuccessful federal prosecution of John Surratt, accused of being one of the Lincoln assassination conspirators. The letter reads, in part: "If not called to Washington and I do not expect to be, I will be very glad to see you here on Wednesday or Friday, whichever may be most convenient to you. On Thursday I visit the Monmouth County Fair, to be held at Freehold, the County Seat..." Sold with a portrait.
