London: Trübner and Co., 1876. First edition. Modern calf. 8 x 4 7/8 inches (20.5 x 12.5 cm); clxi, 354 pp.; 4 folding maps, engraved frontispiece, folding plate, 6 plates, in-text illustration, errata slip. Ex-library with ink stamps throughout, maps and plates a bit trimmed.
In 1774 Bogle led the first British trade mission to Tibet (the first European to visit the country since 1635), and in 1811 Manning became the first Englishman to visit Lhasa. The lengthy introduction by Markham provides background on and context to Bogle's meeting with Teshoo Lama and Manning's with the Dalai Lama. Yakushi (1994) M185a.
