[MELVILLE, HERMAN] Group of two items pertaining to Moby-Dick.
Comprises BEALE, THOMAS. The Natural History of the Sperm Whale...To which is added, a Sketch of a South-Sea Whaling Voyage. London: John van Voorst, 1839. Second, expanded (and first published) edition. Publisher's dark mauve cloth. 7 5/8 x 4 3/4 inches (19.5 x 12 cm); 12, 393, [1] pp., three wood-engraved plates including the frontispiece. Spine faded, boards with light wear and soiling, overall a decent copy. No ads appear ever to have been bound-in; together with Harpers New Monthly Magazine. Volume III. June to November 1851. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1851. Period half green roan over boards. viii, 64 pp.; the only part of Moby-Dick to appear before prior to the publication of the novel appears on pp. 658-665. Light wear.
Beale's book, in the present 1839 edition (it was previously published in an edition of about 133 copies in 1835, and is very rare thus) was extensively consulted by Melville in the writing of Moby-Dick; as noted, the Harper's Magazine appearance The Town-Ho's Story precedes the first English publication of the book by Bentley.
