[NATURAL HISTORY-ART] SMIT, JOSEPH. Group of two fine watercolors
prepared for W.H. Hudson The Naturalist in La Plata. Watercolor wash drawings en grisaille on Windsor and Newton illustration board, each signed (l.l.) and dated 1903. Old mounting adhesive in margins recto, with various printer's notations etc. A few minor specks of foxing.
The subjects are Sentinel Huanaca and Puma. Hudson's Naturalist in La Plata first appeared in 1892. These illustrations appear in the 1922 edition; that of the puma opposite p. 56; that of the huanaco opposite p. 316. Drawn with the exceptional attention to detail that characterizes all of Smit's zoological illustration, these are very fine depictions.
