Lot 202
[SNAKES] EWART, JOSEPH. The Poisonous Snakes of India. For the use of the Officials and Others Residing in the Indian Empire.
London: J. A. Churchill, 1878. First edition, a presentation copy to the Royal College of Surgeons from the author, one of approximately 1000 copies based on the subscription list. Publisher's red cloth, rebacked. 9 11/16 x 7 1/4 inches (27 x 18 cm); 21 plates, 19 of which are in color. Rebacked as noted (rather crudely), covers a bit worn and soiled, upper corners abraded, internally a clean copy.
"The object contemplated in publishing this small work (which may be viewed as a supplement to Sir Joseph Fayrer's 'Thanatophidia of India') has been to place in the hands of the busy officials of India a handy-book, by means of which they may easily recognise any of the poisonous reptiles of the Peninsula." The majority of the snakes depicted were drawn from life by members of the Calcutta School of Art, as is reflected in the plate legends.
