[DARWIN, CHARLES] MACDOUALL, JOHN. Narrative of a voyage to Patagonia and Terra del Fuego, through the Straits of Magellan, in H.M.S. Adventure and Beagle, in 1826 and 1827.
London: Renshaw and Rush, 1833. First edition. Publisher's mauve cloth, printed paper label on spine. 6 1/2 x 4 inches (17 x 10 cm); iv, 320 pp., lithographed frontispiece. Cloth faded, snag at head of spine, AAS blindstamp on title (with tiny deaccession stamp on pastedown).
"A rare first-hand account of the first of the Beagle surveying voyages. The author obtained permission from Captain Stokes to leave the Beagle to return to England on 21 December 1827. The following year Stokes committed suicide, which set in motion the events by which Darwin was himself to join the Beagle." Brooke-Hitching catalogue. This work appears to be extremely uncommon at auction; the last copy was the superlative Brooke-Hitching example; we trace no copy before that for some forty years.
C From the Collection of Quentin Keynes; Gift to his American doctor
