CHURCHILL and DENISON Group portrait at the Sanitary Fair, Albany, New York,
1864, likely printed 1864. Albumen print on card mount, 5 1/2 x 7 5/8 inches (139 x 194 mm), verso numbered 7 with the name in ink of John Kingsbury, possibly the photographer for the firm in attendance, and pencilled annotations pertaining to the subjects. Strong tones, an old mount crease entering the image.
The Gilder Lehman collection has an image, no. 5, similarly with Kingsbury's name. "Relief fairs took place in several urban areas throughout the North during the Civil War to raise money for relief organizations. The 1864 Albany relief fair was organized by civilians to aid the United States Sanitary Commission in providing support for the Union Army.
