FOWX, EGBERT GUY [attrib.] (1821-1889) [Hospital ward in a convalescent camp at Alexandria, VA],
circa 1862-1863. Salted paper print on a card mount, image an oval vignette 5 1/8 x 7 1/2 inches (180 x 128 mm), overall image sheet 5 3/8 x 7 1/2 inches (190 x 138 mm), the card mount apparently of the period. Tones a bit pale, mount a bit toned and soiled, old identifying notes on mount recto.
Fowx frequently used oval vignetting as here. The camp where this ward was situated was nicknamed among the Union troops "Camp Misery," though it was officially referred to as "Camp Convalescent." Clara Barton referred to it scathingly in October 1862 as "a sort of pen into which all who could limp, all deserters and stragglers, were driven promiscuously." It was replaced in 1863, and it is possible that this is the new camp. This appears to be Miller, Battles and Leaders of the Civil War, vol. 7, p. 279.
