SHERMAN, CINDY (b. 1954) [Untitled: Doctor and Nurse],
1980. Gelatin silver print diptych, on semi-gloss double weight photo paper, with full margins, both portraits oval, 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (191 x 140 mm) on sheets 9 7/8 x 7 7/8 inches (2513 x 203 mm), versos both signed, dated ('1980-7') and numbered 14/125 in pencil on the reverse (there were also 15 artist's proofs). No defects noted in raking light. Framed.
Sherman has produced three versions of the doctor/nurse duo. These are playful evocations of the doctors and nurses of mid-20th century television and advertising. The doctor stares seriously into the camera, the nurse smiles flirtatiously; both, of course, are Sherman, playing with gender stereotypes.
