CALLAHAN, HARRY (1912-1999) Group of four portfolios from the Rhode Island School of Design with contributions by Harry Callahan.
Comprises Photographs. Providence, RI: Photographic Education Society, Rhode Island School of Design, [1966-67; 1969; 1970; 1971]. Each portfolio one of 150 copies only (except the first, which is limited to 100). One card case and three cloth clamshell cases, the contents loose as issued. The first 1 f. text, 14 mounted gelatin silver prints; the second [2] ff. text, 24 mounted gelatin silver prints, all unsigned, [1] ff.; the third [2] ff. text, 23 mounted gelatin silver prints, all unsigned, [1] ff.; the fourth [2] ff. text, 27 mounted gelatin silver prints, all unsigned, [1] ff.; the mounts uniformly 13 1/2 x 11 inches (343 x 280 mm). Light wear to portfolio cases.
The 1967 portfolio includes Harry Callahan's Detroit, 1942 and Emmet Gowin's Danville, Virginia 1966. The 1969 portfolio contains Callahan's Eleanor and Barbara, 1953; the 1970 portfolio Eleanor, 1953; the 1971 his Multiple exposure, 1969. A four-year run, complete with all images, a fine showing of the remarkable student and faculty work emerging from Callahan's long tenure directing RISD's photography degree programs. As such, these are important documents in the history of the development of the medium in the U.S.
