Lot Details

Lot 78
HINE, LEWIS WICKES (1874-1940) [Ten Year Old Spinner, North Carolina Cotton Mill, 1908].
Gelatin silver print, 10 1/2 x 13 3/4 inches (268 x 344 mm) on slightly larger sheet, verso with the Hine "Interpretive Photography/Hastings-on-Hudson" backstamp, "Hine" written in pencil. Some retouchings noted, one minor soft crease noted in raking light at upper center. Framed.
Produced for the National Child Labor Committee in 1908, Hine's travels around the country poignantly illustrated the difficult working conditions of children, and led to changes in American child labor labor laws. This is a larger format print than that normally found, and it is possible that this is a posthumous printing from Walter and Naomi Rosenblum. Certainly, the paper does fluoresce under UV, indicating a date of printing post-1955.
Property from an International Corporation.

Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000
