Papa Hou, Maori Treasure Carved Hardwood Wood Box
Carved with tiki-like figures with abalone inset eyes, scrolled and angled designs, both ends with loops for hanging; lacking cover. Length 14 1/4 inches (36.5 cm), width 4 inches (10.3 cm), depth 2 3/8 inches (6 cm).
The rectangular form of papa hou is a North Island of New Zealand variation of the more widespread canoe-shaped waka huia. The other main difference between the two forms is that papa hou are not carved on the bottom, whereas waka huia are.
