French Louis XV/XVI Silver Kitchen Caster
18th Century
Cylindrical with reeded band at foot, the pierced domed cover with pinecone finial, with reeded loop handle. Height 4 1/4 inches, approximately 2 ounces, 10 pennyweights.
Calling this form a kitchen caster is likely a misleading name for this style of caster. Silver was always an expensive material and would have been used at the table with the family and guests rather than saved for use by staff in preparation of the meal. Sometimes this form is called a spice dredger which is probably more fitting to its use.
