Lot 46
Two George III Sterling Silver Tea Caddy Spoons
One with a leaf bowl marked Josiah Snatt, London, 1815; the other marked Francis Powell, London, 1818. Length of first 3 3/4 inches, total approximately 10 dwt.
The ceremony surrounding tea required a great amount of silver in refined homes. The precious tea was kept locked in a tea caddy (itself often silver) and then the mistress of the house would use a small tea caddy spoon to serve her guests - it would have been unthinkable for the staff to have unrestricted access to such a luxury in the 18th and early 19th century.
