Lot 73
Pair of Elizabeth II Sterling Silver Tapersticks
S.J. Shrubsole, London, 1982
Each with faceted knopped stem on hexagonal base. Height 4 1/4 inches, total approximately 6 ounces.
Tapersticks were another invaluable article in a pre-electric world. They were not used for lighting themselves, but instead kept a thin candle that larger candlesticks could be lit from. They were sometimes also referred to as "tobacco candlesticks" because they were used for lighting pipes and cigars. Tapersticks of this form would have been made to match sets of candlesticks, but you also see them incorporated into inkstands where they were used for melting sealing wax for correspondence and documents.
