An Important Group of China Trade Hardwood Furniture
19th Century
Comprising a sofa with heavily-carved acanthus cabriole legs terminating in lingzhi-shaped club feet, a carved apron, scrolled arms and an elaborate crest carved with grapevines entwining openwork scrolling lattice; and two large armchair of similar design with oval back rests: one with elaborately carved square-section arms and legs adorned with acanthus leaves and a scrolling openwork crest and the other of like form with dragon-carved arm supports and a crest incorporating stalks of lingzhi and a scallop shell.
Height of sofa 39 inches, length 78 inches; Height of armchairs 46 inches, width 29 inches.

Provenance:
Commissioned by the merchant Aspinwall Family of New Jersey and later Newburgh, New York. A partial suite of China Trade furniture acquired by Captain Robert Bennet Forbes of Massachusetts including an armchair and sofa of identical design to two pieces from this group were sold in these rooms May 4, 2021.
