Lot Details

Lot 113
Liverpool (Philip Christian & Co.) Porcelain Teapot and Cover
Circa 1775
Of tapering globular form, molded with 'Palm Leaf and Column' forming arched reserves above a band of stiff leaf tips enameled in turquoise and puce, the reserves painted with loose polychrome bouquets, the neck and domed cover border with iron-red scrollwork garlands.
Height 7 1/4 inches, width overall 7 3/4 inches.

At one time this form was incorrectly attributed to Longton Hall, current scholarship notes it was first produced in Liverpool by Philip Christian and later at the Seth Pennington factory. For a similar example, see Bernard Watney, Liverpool Porcelain, fig. 138. Also see W.B. Honey, Old English Porcelain, pl. 117c. A Christian's example was sold, Bonham's, London, 23 June 2004, lot 1168. Comparative Christian's and Pennington examples can be reviewed at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, accession nos. C.1184/&A-1924, C.662&A-1935 and others.
