Provenance:
With E. & H. Manners Antiques, London.
M. Mellanay Delhom Collection, Charlotte, NC.
This service was commissioned in 1762 by George III and Queen Charlotte as a gift for the Queen's brother, Duke Adolphus Frederick IV of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A large portion of the service remained at Strelitz until the 1920s when it was purchased by Joseph Duveen. On the occasion of the Queen's birthday in 1948, a subsequent owner, Mr. James Oakes, returned much of the service to the Royal Collection and it is now displayed at Buckingham Palace.
See the Victoria & Albert Museum catalogue, Rococo, fig. O.39. A dish from the Katz collection, now held at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, is illustrated by Elizabeth Adams, Chelsea Porcelain, first edition, pl. 126. Another in the British Museum is shown in the second edition, fig. 11.16 and for a dish in the National Gallery of Victoria, see the catalogue, Flowers and Fables, fig. 180.
