"The first connected history of the Johnstown Flood," a major disaster caused by several days of extremely heavy rainfall, resulting in the failure of the South Fork Dam and the flooding of four square miles of downtown Johnstown. The flood killed over 2,200 people, at that point the largest loss of civilian life in American history, and resulted in over $17 million worth of damage. Clara Barton and the American Red Cross were among the leaders of the disaster relief effort.
