[MAP] SEATON, ROBERT. Seaton's Map of Palestine, or the Holy Land, with part of Egypt...
London: James Seaton, December 1, 1828 (imprint from lower margin. First edition. Dissected and mounted to linen in leather-backed half calf folder (apparently as issued; the only example we trace has a similar edging of green linen to the map). 24 x 35 3/4 inches (60.5 x 91 cm); engraved by James and Josiah Neele, in fine contemporary hand-coloring. Some wear to the folder, the map generally in fine shape. Bookplate of David Berman on paste-down of folder.
This is the first edition of this configuration of an especially charming map of the Holy Land, with the fine vignette engraving of Christ and the woman of Samaria (from the Gospel of St. John). Seaton and Neele produced an earlier version in about 1815, but the vignettes in that are different. The present map was reissued in an enlarged format in 1835 (with the map area extended further into Egypt), and again in 1853.
